German Shepherd Dog (Herding Group)




German Shepherd Dog• Original Purpose: Herder 
• AKC Recognition: 1908 
• Temperament: Fearless, but not hostile; self-confident, approachable, alert
• Did You Know: The German Shepherd Dog is hailed as the world's leading police, guard and military dog.

Schipperke (Non-Sporting Group)
Schipperke• Original Purpose: Watchdog, ratter
• AKC Recognition: 1904 
• Temperament: Curious, independent, reserved with strangers
• Did You Know: Schipperkes worked as a companion and watchdogs of tradesmen and on river barges in Belgium.

Black Russian Terrier (Working Group)
Black Russian Terrier• Original Purpose: Guard Dog 
• AKC Recognition: 2004 
• Temperament: Confident, courageous and self-assured; deeply loyal to family
• Did You Know: The Black Russian was created in part due to Red Star Kennels, an army-controlled Soviet kennel dedicated to developing special-duty breeds.

Yorkshire Terrier (Toy Group)

• Original Purpose: Ratter 
• AKC Recognition: 1885 
• Temperament: Brave, determined, investigative and energetic
• Did You Know: Its small size makes it a Toy, but the Yorkie is a spirited dog that definitely shows its terrier strain.

Lakeland Terrier (Terrier Group)

Lakeland Terrier• Original Purpose: Vermin hunter
• AKC Recognition: 1934 
• Temperament: Bold, friendly, and confident
• Did You Know: Courageous Lakeland Terriers were known to follow prey underground for great distances.

Gordon Setter (Sporting Group)

• Original Purpose: Bird Dog 
• AKC Recognition: 1884 
• Temperament: Confident, intelligent, affectionate, and loyal
• Did You Know: Gordons are very "talkative," and tend to have constantly wagging tails.

Dachshund (Hound Group)

• Temperament: Clever, lively and courageous

• Temperament: Intelligent, friendly, eager to please
• Did You Know: The American Water Spaniel developed primarily in the Great Lakes region of the U.S. and is the State Dog of Wisconsin.

afn• Original Purpose: Ratter, companion 
• AKC Recognition: 1936      
• Temperament: Alert, inquisitive, loyal and affectionate
• Did You Know: Bred down from larger terriers, Affenpinschers became companions in the home and kept mice from overrunning their mistresses' boudoirs.
