How did you become interested in our sport? Our first Akita was a gift and that is all it took! Loved showing and judging.
Tell us about your most memorable moment in our sport? Our female that was the #1 bitch in the country. We entered a specialty in Indianapolis in July. It was so hot we could hardly breathe and the show was inside with great A/C but grooming was outside. Temperatures hovered around 110 degrees so you can imagine how hot that was! Our bitch was so heavily coated I thought she would have a heat stroke. Not so. She defeated 157 dogs that day which included all the top 15 males and can't remember how many females. Was exciting to say the least. Friends owned her litter mate and won a BIS in Chicago during the December cluster held at McCormick Place.
What is it that attracted you to the TVKC? Friends asked to attend a meeting and decided to join. There were only 12 - 15 people there for that meeting.
What do you like most about being a member of TVKC? I really liked doing the shows here in town and helped with the show the following year. Became shoe chair for the next 12 years, helped create the Smoky Mountain Cluster of Dog Shows. Jean Dinkins was the only member besides me that was active in the club that help with the cluster. There was a hiatus of several years (4) that I did not do the shows and then was approached about doing this again. Nancye Davis another member was the coordinator for the shows. Each club had a show chair for the four day cluster. This was a lot of work but enjoyed all of the times we drove to NC to meet or to Newport to plan our shows. I was the Delegate to the AKC for 21 years. Served on the AKC Canine Foundation as 1st VP for 13 years. Great years for the dogs!
How do your dogs impact your life? I enjoy all dogs but partial to the Akita. Westies come in second.
Is there anything that you would like to share? I miss the people who were dear to me and have enjoyed my 25 years of judging. I am approved to judge the Working and Hound groups plus three Toys, Pugs, Poodles and Havanese.
